Janney awakens to take Dagenham to familiar dreamland

There were few real upsets in the second round of the FA Cup but the chairmen of three Nationwide Conference sides – Morecambe, Farnborough and Dagenham & Redbridge – will be rubbing their hands in anticipation of the draw for the third round and a possible lucrative meeting with Manchester United or Arsenal and the chance to create a piece of Cup history.

They all came through ties against other non-League sides. Dagenham won 2-1 at the Dr Martens Premier side Crawley Town. Crawley led, Junior McDougald equalised, the hosts then had Ellis Hooper sent off and two minutes from time, Mark Janney won it for the Essex side.

At Christie Park, Morecambe, fifth in the Conference, beat second-placed Chester City, 3-1 after trailing 1-0 and 2-1. But at that score Chester had Ryan Sugden sent off, Jim Bentley's second goal made it 2-2 and Adriano Rigoglioso scored the winner.

Farnborough also turned league form on its head when they beat Southport 3-0 at Haig Avenue.

Elsewhere Third Division Darlington beat Stevenage Borough of the Conference 4-1 and the Unibond Premier club Barrow went down 3-1 at Shrewsbury Town

In matches that turned league positions on their head, Exeter City, one off the bottom of the Third Division, beat Rushden & Diamonds, second in the same section 3-1 and Cambridge United of the Third drew 2-2 with Northampton Town of the Second.

For vulnerable Premier sides, Wigan might be a good team to avoid. Top of the Second Division and fresh from a Worthington Cup win over Fulham, they are in the hat after a 3-0 defeat of Luton.

Finally, they do like to be beside the seaside. Jellied eels proved as nourishing as cream, teas as Southend drew 1-1 with Bournemouth at Roots Hall and Bernard Manning had the last laugh over Basil Fawlty when Blackpool beat Torquay United 3-1 at Bloomfield Road.
