An 11th win in 13 home matches took the Us into the play-off places as goals by Jamie Cureton and Chris Iwelumo beat Wolves. Cureton fired in his 13th goal of the season from a free-kick and on half-time Iwelumo added the second. "I felt it was a clear handball and everyone on the ground saw it," Wolves manager Mick McCarthy complained, "their second goal was hard to take." Neill Collins pulled a goal back for Wolves, but the Us held on to go sixth.

Without prized striker Freddy Eastwood for a second consecutive away game, Southend again picked up a precious point on the road. Coventry led after 16 minutes when Darren Currie's corner was headed on by Robert Page and Elliott Ward drove in the ball from 10 yards. In the 54th minute, Mark Gower scored Southend's first goal in five matches. But they still haven't won away all season. Of Eastwood, manager Steve Tilson said: "We want to keep our best players and we haven't had any firm bids."

The Tigers took full advantage of Burnley's recent poor form and closed the gap on sides just above the relegation zone thanks to a goal by Dean Marney and, after a foul on Nick Barmby, a Craig Fagan penalty. "I'm sure the chairman [Adam Pearson] will make a decision sooner rather than later for everybody's sake," caretaker manager Phil Brown said of a permanent appointment. "I do want the job. It's a great football club and a great opportunity for me."

The Canaries ended a run of five games without a win when Dion Dublin, set up by Robert Earnshaw, scored the only goal against struggling Rangers. "He is a great player to have around the place," the Canaries' manager, Peter Grant, said. "Not just for what he does out there on the pitch, but also for the influence he has on his colleagues. He was tremendous today, a handful all afternoon. I'd love to have Dion here again next year, that's for sure."

Albion's solid home form - this was their fifth successive win at The Hawthorns - lifted them to fifth with goals by Diomansy Kamara, his 12th of the season, and Jason Koumas, moved into central midfield for the second half. "Koumas has got the ability to score wonderful goals and win you matches on days like today when you are not as fluent as you would like to be," Tony Mowbray, the Albion manager, said.
