Real Madrid nightmare week continued after the club announced forward Vinicius Jr has torn ligaments in his right ankle.

The 18-year-old was left in tears after being subbed off on Tuesday night in the 4-1 Champions League home defeat to Ajax in the second leg of the last 16.

Marco Asensio replaced the Brazilian youngster after 35 minutes, with Los Blancos unable to recover, eventually losing 5-3 on aggregate.

Further investigation has confirmed Vinicius Jr's early fears, with reports suggesting he could be set for a two-month absence.

“After tests today by the medical team at Real Madrid, our player Vinicius Jr has been diagnosed with a torn ligament of the tibiofibular joint in the right leg,” read a statement on the club’s website.

Madrid’s loss to Ajax saw them surrender the trophy they had won for the last three seasons.

Their La Liga campaign has also been a disappointment to date, with defeat to leaders Barcelona in last weekend’s El Clasico leaving them third in the table, 12 points behind their bitter rivals.

Manager Santiago Solari is now set to depart, with a new manager being sort to take over this summer, while a squad overhaul, including the sale of Gareth Bale, is expected.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp is part of a three-man shortlist at the Bernabeu.
