Do away goals count in Champions League play-off ties? Manchester United concede to Club Brugge

Manchester United were stunned by Club Brugge when just a few minutes into the first leg of their Champions League play-off they had conceded.

The own goal by Michael Carrick was incredibly unlucky, but what was even worse, is that it happened at Old Trafford.

Like most European ties over two legs, the play-offs adhere to the away goals rule.

If the tie is level after the second leg in Belgium next Wednesday, the team with the highest number of away goals will advance.

If the tie is level after the second leg and the sides have scored the same number of away goals, 30 minutes of extra-time will be played. If no further goals are scored, penalties will decide who advances.

If the tie is level after extra time but the away side has scored during the extra 30 minutes, the away team progresses by virtue of the away goals rule being applied again after the extra period.
