Stefan Edberg was humbled by the unseeded MaliVai Washington in the first round of the Genovese Hamlet Cup at Commack, New York. The American needed just 60 minutes to achieve a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the 29-year- old Swedish No 2 seed.

The defending champion, Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, had no problems beating Olivier Delaitre 6-1, 6-3 in 54 minutes, however. The top seed lost just 12 points in his eight service games.

Marc Rosset, the No 3 seed, cruised past Martin Damm 6-4, 6-1, while Andrei Medvedev became the only seeded player remaining in the bottom half of the draw when he defeated Richey Reneberg 6-2, 6-4.
