Round-Up: Taylor-made heroics for Hampshire

Hampshire's Billy Taylor hit the last ball of the day - his first - to the boundary as the hosts defeated Derbyshire yesterday by one wicket in a thrilling finish to their Pro40 First Division match at the Rose Bowl.

Chasing the visitors' 225 for 6, the opener John Crawley hit 100 off 110 balls but wickets began to tumble as the chase intensified. However, last man Taylor came to the crease needing two from the final delivery and hit it for four.

Earlier the Derbyshire captain, Steve Stubbings, had scored 72 off 79 balls with Gary Balance (73) and Hasan Adnan (33) the other significant contributors.

Anthony McGrath smashed 148 off 120 balls as struggling Yorkshire beat Somerset by 16 runs at Taunton in the second division. The visitors made 284 for 3 thanks to McGrath as the opener, having shared a first-wicket stand of 118 with Craig White (53), hit six sixes and 11 fours. The Australian Darren Lehmann maintained the momentum with 74 off 65 balls, hitting nine fours.

Neil Edwards (65) and the dangerous Cameron White (34) recovered from the early loss of Matthew Wood while James Hildreth (53) and Wes Durston maintained the chase. Durston cracked three sixes and four fours in a 42-ball 62 not out but despite late flourishes from Arul Suppiah and Peter Trego (both 20), the hosts ran out of time.

Warwickshire's attempt to catch Essex at the top of the First Division was halted by Northamptonshire, who successfully chased down a revised Duckworth-Lewis target of 158 at a rain-hit Edgbaston. Having opted to bat, the hosts had reached 127 for four off 28.4 overs when rain halted play, Moeen Ali top scoring with 64 off 61 balls.

The Bears' innings ended there and Northamptonshire, with the advantage of batting second, came out needing to score 158 off 28 overs. They slipped to 53 for 3 but Usman Afzaal (38), Robert White (27), Lance Klusener (25 not out) and Bilal Shafayat (21) saw the Steelbacks home with six balls to spare.

Lancashire suffered their second washout in three matches as, with the rain becoming heavier, the umpires Graham Burgess and John Holder abandoned the game at 4pm.

Bangladesh wrapped up an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match one-day international series with Kenya yesterday thanks to some late heroics.

In the end an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 51 between Mashrafe Mortaza (43 not out) and Abdur Razzak (14 not out) was enough to see the visitors home after Kenya, defending a total of 184, had looked set to level the series and take it to a decider.

It was harsh on Kenya and, in particular, Thomas Odoyo who claimed 4 for 36 with the ball after scoring 84 runs.

The South African pace bowlers Makhaya Ntini and Shaun Pollock are doubts for the team's first match against Sri Lanka today in the triangular series with India. Ntini pulled his hamstring in the second Test with Sri Lanka and Pollock has a lower back strain.
