Harmison took 3 for 25 as a support act to Mark Davies, who took 6 for 32. Stephen Moore scored 46 for the visitors and shared a stand of 75 for the first wicket with Stephen Peters, who made 30. In their reply Durham reached 139 for 2, with Paul Collingwood making an unbeaten 88.

At Lord's, David Hussey reached 117 not out at the close as Nottinghamshire rattled up 399 for 6 against Middlesex in the First Division. Chris Read made 63 and Darren Bicknell 56.

Notts' new captain, Stephen Fleming, made a four-ball duck against his former county. Alan Richardson took his wicket in a haul of 5 for 75.

Rain affected the other Second Division matches. Northampton reached 90 for no loss between the showers at Wantage Road, against Leicestershire, but no play was possible between Yorkshire and Somerset at Headingley.
