Seventeen wickets fell at The Riverside yesterday leaving Durham, after a superb start, in danger of defeat inside two days against Derbyshire.

Mark Davies claimed 6 for 44 as Derbyshire were shot out for just 195, their total inflated by an eighth-wicket stand of 90 between Graeme Welch (59) and Ant Botha (42). But Durham slumped to 64 for 7 before the close, with their top score being Jon Lewis' unbeaten 19. Jon Moss took 3 for 11 and the wicketkeeper Luke Sutton five catches.

An eighth-wicket stand of 198 between Andre Adams and James Middlebrook enabled Essex to put Leicestershire under pressure at Grace Road. Adams, the Kiwi all-rounder, making his Essex Championship debut as the replacement overseas player for Danish Kaneria, smashed seven sixes in his 124 from 91 balls. Middlebrook weighed in with 92 as Essex recovered from 108 for 7 to 322 all out. Essex then maintained the initiative as Leicestershire slipped to 64 for 3 before the close.

Sri Lanka A dominated the first day of their four-day match against Glamorgan at St Helen's, Swansea. After dismissing Glamorgan in their first innings for 169 the tourists replied with 178 for 3.

In Colombo, Sachin Tendulkar shone with bat and ball as India outclassed Bangladesh in the second round of the Asia Cup at the Sinhalese Sports Club. Tendulkar took three wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 177 in 49.1 overs and then guided India to an eight-wicket win with 82, including 11 fours and one six. Tendulkar shared a 154-run stand for the second wicket with his captain Sourav Ganguly, who scored 60. Earlier, Virender Sehwag raced to 16 from eight deliveries, before being caught at point off Tareq Aziz. India won with 11.3 overs to spare, to claim a bonus point.
