James Whittaker, the secretary and general manager of Leicester, said: "We are excited that Devon has agreed to join us and we know he will strengthen our squad and help to bring in the silverware."

Malcolm said: "I am delighted to have joined Leicestershire and I look forward to playing alongside an already strong group of players. I know I can help build on recent success and add more trophies to the club's cabinet."

In Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Sanath Jayasuriya yesterday hit 87 runs to move past the 1,000-run mark in the one-day game this year and help Sri Lanka to a formidable 276 for 9 and victory by 123 runs against Zimbabwe in their one-day Coca-Cola Cup match.

On a favourable pitch Jayasuriya hit the Zimbabwean bowlers to all parts of the Sharjah stadium. The left-handed opener hit 12 fours and two sixes in his 66-ball innings, beingparticularly severe on the left-arm medium paceman Bryan Strang, hitting him for one six and four boundaries in an over.

In their reply, Zimbabwe could only manage 153 all out in 48.3 overs.
