John Crawley helped himself to an unbeaten 103 as Hampshire overcame Middlesex by three runs at the Rose Bowl yesterday.

Middlesex enthusiastically chased the home side's 237 for 5, hoping to give captain Angus Fraser a winning send-off.

Fraser claimed two wickets in his final county appearance but was unable to dislodge Crawley who, aided by Giles White's 60, set a target which proved just beyond the visitors in the final over.

A fine all-round performance by the South Africa captain, Shaun Pollock, saw Warwickshire to a 58-run win over Glamorgan in Cardiff. Pollock followed up a 64 in his side's 261 for 8 with a Scrooge-like 4 for 12.

Warwickshire will travel to the Hove for their quarter-final where yesterday Sussex and Surrey were involved in an exciting climax. The scores finished level at 220 but Sussex secured the two points by virtue of having lost fewer wickets.

A fighting half century from Roni Irani helped Essex edge out Kent in Canterbury while Worcestershire secured their place in the quarter-finals with a seven-wicket win over Somerset in a rain affected match at Taunton.

Leicestershire eased to an eight-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Grace Road to end their rivals' hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Durham closed their Benson and Hedges campaign on a high with a second win but their four-wicket triumph over Derbyshire was not enough to see them to the knockout stages.
