British clubs take home the prizes

British clubs finished on a high note in the Los Reyes International tournament here yesterday in typical British weather of cold, driving rain. Grange, the Scottish champions, took the men's title, with Southgate and Reading following them home.

Grange, who would be the first to admit they had an easy draw and regretted not being tested against the two English clubs, finished with a convincing 6-1 win against Pedralbes, from Spain, with Donald McFarlane claiming a hat-trick.

Southgate, who moved ahead of Reading on goal difference following their 6-0 win against Barcelona, did much as they pleased against the hosts after Duncan Woods had given them a 14th-minute lead.

Goals from Piedro Attala and Peter Gibbins before the interval put the Middlesex club in complete control.

Reading's game against El Cid, the Spanish under-21 squad, was a different affair. Fiercely contested and with Reading struggling to recapture their form of earlier games, the Spaniards took advantage of lapses in the Reading defence to lead 2-0 at the interval.

A reorganisation in the Reading ranks at the interval and a few moments of magic from their latest acquisition, the New Zealander Karl Sanders, put Reading back in the game. Mark Pearn scored from a glorious move involving five players and some 80 yards, with the captain Jon Wyatt collecting the equaliser.

Wyatt had the chance to win the game after Pearn had won a penalty stroke, but his powerful flick came back harmlessly off the crossbar and Reading had to settle for the draw.
