Bath leave out Catt and Ubogu

Mike Catt, the struggling England full-back who plays outside- half for Bath, was brusquely dropped last night from Saturday's Pilkington Cup fifth-round tie at Wakefield. Even without Catt, Victor Ubogu and Steve Ojomoh, the holders will field 11 internationals, writes Steve Bale.

It is no consolation for the 24-year-old South African that instead of travelling to Yorkshire he will be having some badly needed full-back practice playing there for Bath United against Orrell's second XV at the Rec.

He will be joined by Ubogu, who has this season lost his place as an England as well as a Bath prop and was on the bench at Twickenham on Saturday. Catt's outside-half place has gone to Richard Butland. Also born in South Africa, he was outstanding for English Students against their Welsh counterparts last Friday.

There is not even the pretence common on these occasions that Catt, whose England place is also under review, is being rested. The Wakefield tie, with the winners going to Bedford or Bristol in the quarter-final, has already been postponed once and could well be again if the weather forecast proves accurate.

Ubogu is displaced at tight head by John Mallett, who won a World Cup cap as a replacement against Western Samoa last year.
