Almanack: Tongue-tied by PC protests

A FURORE in Kentucky, where the logo of the University of Kentucky sports teams has puritans in a lather. 'We've had calls from supporters and fans who informed us that they thought a portion of the logo was offensive to them,' Larry Ivy, associate athletic director, announced last week. 'We thought it was just a joke initially, but we've had more than one call and we took it seriously and decided to make a change.' Almanack was on the line to the Lexington campus straight away. We spoke to Alyssa Middleton, assistant director of University of Kentucky marketing, promotion and licensing, who has one of those Bluegrass accents that are as sweet as maple syrup. We explained that we wished to stage an experiment comparing transatlantic sensibilities, and she graciously agreed to fax us the contentious logo, which we reproduce here.

Naturally we do not wish gratuitously to offend our readers, but we contend that only in the country that spawned political correctness could such an image cause outrage. Spotted it yet? It's on the tip of his tongue.
