Sturges dies

San Luis Obispo, California (Reuter) - Film director John Sturges, 82, died on Tuesday of emphysema, a hospital spokesman said.

Sturges was known as the last of the old-time Hollywood big- action movie directors. His first major feature film success was Bad Day at Black Rock in 1954, which earned an Academy Award nomination. The followed Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), The Old Man and the Sea (1958) and The Magnificent Seven (1960). He also had success with The Great Escape (1967), and with his last film, The Eagle has Landed (1977).
