In London, about 300 Muslims scuffled with police outside the Central Mosque in Regent's Park during a demonstration in which Israeli and American flags were burnt.

The protest was organised by the Al-Muhajiroun group, whose leader, Syrian-born Omar Bakri Mohammed, said he knew which "freedom fighters" were involved in the Yemeni attacks, and that others would follow.

He told the crowd: "All Israeli targets are legitimate for you. All Israelis must be destroyed. The American and British governments are acting to destroy Islam."

After the bombing of the British embassy in Yemensecurity around potential Jewish and Israeli terrorist targets in the UK was tightened. Police stepped up surveillance of Middle Eastern suspects in cities across Britain. Police and volunteers have increased patrols at synagogues and other Jewish community centres.

Mike Whine, of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: "We are concerned. We have raised our security levels as a consequence of the Middle East situation. We have a pro-active approach to security and I think that has pre-empted many potential attacks."

In July 1994, two car bombs rocked the Israeli embassy in Kensington, west London, and the United Jewish and Israel Appeal charity offices in Finchley, north London, the day after Israel and Jordan signed a peace deal. Two Palestinian students were jailed for conspiring in the attacks.
