Gunmen kill aid worker

ANKARA (AP) - Gunmen killed an Australian relief worker and wounded his colleague in northern Iraq yesterday, an Iraqi Kurdish representative said.

Stan Cameroon, of Care International, was shot dead and another Westerner, who was not named, was wounded in the same attack, Safeen Dizayee, the Ankara representative for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, said. Australian Broadcasting Corp radio said the UN-sponsored aid programme in northern Iraq was suspended following the shooting.

He said the two Care workers were returning from Chamchamal to Sulaymaniyah in Kurdish- held northern Iraq when three people stopped their car and opened fire. The gunmen escaped and their identity was unknown, Mr Dizayee said.

There have been several attacks on UN and Western relief workers in northern Iraq, mostly carried out by Kurds recruited by the Iraqi intelligence service. The attacks were more frequent last summer, but had slackened off in recent months.
