Polish files scandal

WARSAW, (Reuter) - Poland's Christian National Union party, one of the main coalition partners, yesterday voted to expel its deputy chairman for releasing files compiled in the communist era which led to the collapse of Jan Olszewski's government in June.

The secret police files, some of which were leaked to the media, alleged that many prominent Poles, including the party's chairman, Wieslaw Chrzanowski, and President Lech Walesa had been agents of the former regime's special services.

The Christian National Union resolution expelling Antoni Macierewicz said he had been required as interior minister to provide information on people who had been informers to the Communist secret police, but instead he had released the names of people listed in Interior Ministry files without checking their veracity.
