Partying Berlusconi a 'security risk'

The embattled Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi is to be summoned by parliamentary security chiefs who fear his hard-partying lifestyle poses a national security risk.

The daily newspaper Corriere della Sera suggested the Parliamentary Committee for the Intelligence and Security Services (Copasir) was increasingly concerned as more allegations emerged yesterday about Mr Berlusconi's private life.

Massimo D'Alema, an opposition MP and Copasir president, told a press conference: "The secret services are entrusted with the security of the Prime Minister and we intend to return to this theme and consider it correct to hear what the Prime Minister has to say on the matter."

Some of Mr Berlusconi's parties, with prostitutes and alleged drug use, are thought to have been held at his official residence.
