China executes 'at least' 1,400
More than 1,400 people were reported executed in China last year, but the actual number of executions was probably much higher, AP reports from Peking. Amnesty International said at least 2,564 people were sentenced to death in 1993, of whom 1,419 were reported executed, but those totals 'are believed to drastically fall short of the actual number of death sentences and executions'.
