Chihana appeals against sentence
LUSAKA (AP) - The main opposition leader in Malawi yesterday mounted an appeal against a two- year prison sentence so that he can campaign for democracy ahead of a June referendum on the country's political future.
Chakufwa Chihana, a trade union leader and head of the fledgeling Alliance for Democracy, was cheered by thousands of supporters at the Supreme Court in the commercial capital of Blantyre after being released briefly from his prison cell for the case, diplomats said.
