A British serviceman was killed in action in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said today.

The soldier from the 1st Battalion The Rifles died from his wounds yesterday after being hit by enemy fire.

He was killed while on a foot patrol during a joint operation between the UK and Afghan National Army against enemy forces close to the District Centre of Sangin in Helmand Province.

Commander Paula Rowe, spokeswoman for Task Force Helmand, said: "All members of Task Force Helmand are deeply saddened by the death of this brave soldier and we offer our sympathy, thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and comrades as they try to come to terms with their tragic loss."

His next of kin have been informed.
