Albanian ex-PM jailed
Fatos Nino, the Albanian opposition leader and former prime minister, was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in jail for misappropriating state property and falsifying official documents, AP reports from Tirana. The scandal implicating Nano and three other former senior officials involved Italian aid given to Albania in 1991, when Europe's poorest country virtually stopped producing food in the mayhem that followed the fall of Communist rule. Nano was charged with misappropriating pounds 490,000 in aid.
