Aid team quits Rwandan refugee camp
About 50 foreign aid workers were withdrawn by their organisations after Hutus suspected of carrying out massacres before fleeing Rwanda provoked a riot at the camp in Tanzania on Wednesday evening, AP reports from Kigali. The camp programme officer, Karl Steinacker, said aid workers at the camp for an estimated 344,000 Rwandan refugees halted all programmes except for the distribution of relief supplies.
He said about 5,000 people - many armed with machetes, knives and sticks - invaded the UN compound, trying to prevent officials from kicking out a former Rwandan mayor suspected of being involved in massacres. The relief workers remained in the nearby town of Ngara, some 30 miles (50km) from the camp.
