Security forces loyal to Ivory Coast's incumbent leader, Laurent Gbagbo, who refuses to cede power despite losing the recent election, clashed with crowds in Abidjan yesterday.
Witnesses said at least two civilians and two soldiers were killed. The troops had moved in on the suburb of Abobo, the stronghold of Mr Gbagbo's rival, Alassane Ouattara.
UN peacekeepers who attempted to enter the area in a convoy were forced by a mob of Gbagbo supporters to make a U-turn.
