An official in Burundi says attackers from neighbouring Congo have killed 36 people at a pub in the central African nation.

Bujumbura province governor Jacques Minami said the attackers descended on the pub west of Burundi's capital last night.

He says the attackers had crossed the river from Congo.

Survivor Jackson Kabura, who was wounded in the stomach, said the men entered wearing fatigues.

He says: "One of them said, 'kill them all, kill them all. Make sure there's no survivors'."

President Pierre Nkurunziza has declared three days of mourning.

Burundi suffered a 16-year civil war that only ended in 2009 when its remaining rebel groups demobilised.
