Police stop London traffic to let ducks cross the road

It seems the Met's strategy of 'total policing' now extends to wildlife too

It’s been a busy day for the Metropolitan Police in Lewisham today, as officers were forced to take to the streets to carry out their duties.

The official Lewisham Met Police twitter account announced earlier that officers had been busy all morning, “but just to prove its not all crime.... [we’ve] been helping some local residents.”

The officers, who as yet are only identifiable by the numbers 563PL and 191PL, stopped traffic on Bromley Road in Catford, South London, to ensure a group of ducks could cross the road safely.

Sergeant Biddle told The Independent that helping ducks cross roads is "not something that officers from #Lewisham normally deal with," but this was done to stop a possible accident.

It is currently unclear whether the ducks made it all the way across the road, or whether it's a PC's duty to look out for wildlife, but The Independent has reached out to the Metropolitan Police for confirmation.
