Campbell's daughter fails in 'Bluebird' appeal

Gina Campbell is appealing for money to rebuild Bluebird and put it on display.

Her father died in 1967, when the jet-powered boat crashed as he tried to break his own world water-speed record on Coniston Water, in the Lake District.

The vessel was raised from the depths of Coniston Water in 2001 and Campbell's remains were later discovered and buried in the town.

His daughter's efforts to restore Bluebird and put it on display in a local museum have so far been unsuccessful. She is planning to submit a second application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Mike Humphreys, of Ruskin Museum in Coniston, which wants to house the restored Bluebird, said the fund "wanted us to conserve the wreck whereas the family want the boat to be rebuilt".
