David Campbell was born near Adelong, Australia, and came to England to study at Cambridge before joining the Royal Australian Air Force. He later returned to Australia where he died in 1979. His first collection, Speak with the Sun, was published in 1949. This poem is from Fivefathers, an anthology of Australian poets edited by Les Murray (Carcanet, pounds 9.95). This is the first poem in this week's series on the theme of visual art.
