Kathleen Jamie was born in Renfrewshire in 1962, grew up in Midlothian and studied Philosophy at Edinburgh University. At the age of 19, she won a Gregory Award, a year later published her first collection, and twice won Scottish Arts Council Book Awards. Her most recent collections include The Way We Live (Bloodaxe, 1987) and The Autonomous Region (Bloodaxe, 1993). This poem is from her latest collection The Queen of Sheba (Bloodaxe, pounds 6.95). All this week the Daily Poem features the theme of birds.
