John Gurney has been writing full-time since 1985. He was a prizewinner in the 1982, 1991 and 1992 National Poetry Competitions, won the Scottish Open Poetry Competition in 1988, and was first in the 1992 Bridport International Poetry Competition. This poem appears in a new collection Coal - A Sonnet Sequence, illustrated by Paul Peter Piech, a graphic artist from New York, and published by Stride (11 Sylvan Road, Exeter, Devon, EX4 6EW) at pounds 6.95.
