John Smith, the Labour leader, getting to grips with a model of Bradford City Hall. Mr Smith was in West Yorkshire to celebrate the centenary of the Independent Labour Party. He unveiled a plaque on the Chapel Street building where the group's founding conference, held in the wake of a textile strike in the city, was chaired by Keir Hardie, Labour's first parliamentary leader
