Opera outcry
Covent Garden Opera House erupted in first-night boos and catcalls for Richard Jones and Nigel Lowry, the director and designer of Das Rheingold, the first of Wagner's Ring Cycle operas. It included the goddess Freia portrayed as a single parent carrying a doll, and the evil dwarf Alberich wearing frogman's flippers and a trilby.
