A FOOTBALL linesman survived being struck by lightning during a match at Burbage, Leicestershire.

A witness said Alan Towers, 50, of Barwell, Leicestershire, was probably saved by the plastic handle on his flag.

Sue Taylor said: 'There were several claps of thunder followed by lightning and Mr Towers was hit. He raised his flag to make a decision and the flag was struck by lightning.'

He was shaken but did not need treatment.
