Last ditch
The Anglo-French venture, Laing/GTM, builders of the pounds 300m second Severn bridge, have dug a one and a half- mile ditch to safeguard rare plants and animals on the Gwent Levels in South Wales, where construction work is being carried out. The levels are criss-crossed by rhines - open ditches that have existed since Roman times.
