Firefighters in Cornwall have rescued a toddler who had locked himself in his mother’s car, while the child looked on with great amusement.

His mother, Kirsty Green, was loading the car with shopping in Bude when she realised 14-month-old son Brandon had activated the car’s central locking system.

A grinning Brandon can be seen clutching the steering wheel of the car while the rescue team attempt to free him.

"I was a bit panicky at first, wondering how I was going to get him out, but luckily a few other shoppers quickly came to help me out, and one lady working in Lidl phoned 101," his mother said.

Ms Green described the rescue crews from Bude Community Fire Station as “amazing” and “a credit to the community”.

The fire crews were at first using small hand tools to try and free the toddler. But after crew members observed him put a two pence coin in his mouth, they smashed the car's rear window and climbed through.

Ms Green said she started to panic, worrying that Brandon might choke on the coin.

Bude Community Fire Station said on Twitter: "Whilst one pump was dealing with the scrap fire another appliance was mobilised to an infant locked in a car..."

"You can see that our Watch Manager is a natural; keeping the infant entertained whilst crews gained entry."
