A toddler has been left in a coma after choking on a grape at Pizza Hut.

Jacob Jenkins, aged two, was resuscitated by paramedics after a grape he had eaten became lodged in his throat during a family meal at a Pizza Hut branch in Hartlepool Marina.

His mother, Abigail Wilson, said a restaurant first aider tried to help while his father rushed outside for assistance, according to the Hartlepool Mail.

Two first aiders from the entertainment complex also gave medical assistance before paramedics arrived and took the child to hospital in an air ambulance.

Jacob’s heart reportedly stopped during the incident, but doctors have since managed to restart it.

The boy was placed into an induced coma on Friday evening after paramedics managed to bring him back to life.

The toddler was initially taken to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, but later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A fundraising page has since been set up and so far has received over £4,200.

The page says the family are “going through unimaginable times every minute of everyday. While baby Jacob is fighting for his life his family will be at his bedside vigil 24/7.”

Miss Wilson told the Hartlepool Mail: “We are all just trying to stay strong for Jacob. But it’s hard as there is nothing we can do but wait.

“Doctors have told us if he does wake up he won’t be the same little boy we knew."

A Pizza Hut spokesperson said: "We can confirm that there was a very serious incident involving a child at our Hartlepool Hut.

"Our thoughts and concern are with the child and his family at this very difficult time."
