Memorial to the dead of South Atlantic unveiled

A memorial to the 255 British sailors, soldiers, and airmen killed during the Falklands War was unveiled yesterday.

The dedication at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, was attended by 600 service personnel and their families.

It ended with a flypast by a Vulcan bomber and three military helicopters to commemorate those who fell during the South Atlantic campaign in 1982. Among those helping to unveil the memorial was Sara Jones, widow of Lt-Col Herbert "H" Jones, who won a posthumous Victoria Cross for his bravery at the Battle of Goose Green.

She was joined by Kathryn Nutbeem, whose father, Maj Roger Nutbeem, was among 48 men who died when the Royal Fleet Auxiliary troop ship Sir Galahad was bombed at Fitzroy Cove by Argentine fighter-bombers.
