For 118 years, daughters of Britain's wealthiest parents have streamed to the gates of Roedean. They may soon be joined by 95m litres of sewage a day.

Southern Water has proposed the building of a treatment plantonly a healthy hurl away from the lacrosse pitches.

Officials at the £6,930-a-term schoollearned of the plans last week. "We are gathering information and so cannot comment at this stage," they said. Damon Elliott, project manager for Southern Water, saidthe plant was needed to meet European water standards: "We have eight possible sites, but no preferred one at this stage."
