Family pays tribute to Briton drowned in Thai flash flood

The family of a British man who was swept to his death by a flash flood in a cave in Thailand has praised his "brave and courageous" actions.

John Cullen, 24, was one of eight people killed when water washed away a party of tourists as they explored the cave in the Khao Sok national park in the south of the country on Saturday.

His fiancee Helena Carroll, 21, of Solihull, West Midlands, survived by clinging to a ledge for 16 hours while Mr Cullen died as he swam to fetch help.

Mr Cullen's elder brother Stephen said the pair were "very much in love" and praised his brother who "died trying to do the right thing".

Speaking on behalf of the family, he said: "John was a bright, passionate young man who embraced life.

"He was a son and brother to be proud of. He had his whole life in front of him.

"John died trying to do the right thing. He was brave and courageous in his actions.

"The family are very proud, but devastated by their loss."
