Coroner records open verdict on man found in Barrymore's pool

A coroner today recorded an open verdict on the death of a man found floating in entertainer Michael Barrymore's swimming pool.

Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said: "None of these witnesses who were partyguests for three hours have given to this court an explanation about how StuartLubbock, a previously fit 31-year-old, should be found floating in a swimmingpool at the premises with a significant level of alcohol and drugs in his system and have serious anal injuries."

Detective Chief Superintendent Ian McNeill said that as the cause of death hadbeen "unascertainable" and there was no witness evidence, he decided tosuspend the criminal investigation.

Both Justin Merritt and Jonathan Kenney were arrested on suspicion of murder by police but later was released without charge.

He said: "Police were unable to justify pursuing an investigation in this case."It was established that a violent assault had taken place but we were unable to establish who was responsible for those injuries (to Mr Lubbock) or his death."

He revealed that 123 statements had been from 157 people and he added that a further 1,310 documents had been produced in relation to the case.

The officer added: "If this position was to change, any new information would be fully considered and this decision would be revisited (the decision to close the case)."

He went on: "I would like to publicly thank Stuart's family who have continually shown spirit of team work and co-operation in a demanding and complex inquiry."

The detective said that the investigation had been "trying and emotional" but praised the dignity shown by the family.
