Man arrested after house fire

A man was arrested today after a house was "extensively damaged" by fire.

Police were called to reports of a blaze at an address in Tarbock Road, in Huyton, Merseyside, at about 6.55am.

Explosions from the scene were also reported.

There are no reports of injuries or casualties but surrounding homes have been evacuated as a precaution.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "Officers are in attendance in Tarbock Road, Huyton, following an incident at an address this morning.

"Emergency services were called at around 6.55am to reports of a fire at the address.

"A house has been extensively damaged but there are no reports of any injuries.

"Surrounding houses have been evacuated as a precaution.

"Officers are working with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to fully establish the cause of the fire and would urge motorists to avoid the area.

"A man has been arrested in connection with this incident. However, at this stage his address and age is unknown.

"Anyone with information should phone Merseyside Police via 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."

Residents have now been allowed to return to the affected properties in Tarbock Road, a police spokeswoman said.
