Bolton pensioner suffers stroke during burglary ordeal

A pensioner has suffered a stroke and a bleed to his brain after he was robbed and assaulted in his own home.

The 87-year-old man was attacked after being woken from his sleep early yesterday morning by the sound of a window being broken at his house in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

The man, who has not been named, found the intruder standing at the foot of his bed and was told to hand over his money before being hit in the face.

The burglar stole his wallet, bank book and cheque book before he left.

Detective Inspector Denise Pye of Greater Manchester Police said: “This man was awoken, only to find an intruder standing over him making threats.

"Before he knew what was happening, he was savagely attacked and as a result of this ferocious assault, he sustained a stroke and has been diagnosed with a bleed to his brain.

“He is currently in a serious condition in hospital and is being treated for his injuries. Our thoughts are with him and we hope he makes a recovery.”
