The Metropolitan Police yesterday agreed to pay pounds 10,000 damages to a man assaulted by seven off-duty officers. Gary Stretch, 30, was in the Limes pub in Hackney, east London, at the time of the 'violent and unprovoked' attack in November 1987, the High Court was told.

Mr Stretch, of Hoxton, north London, who was punched, kicked, and held in a headlock while his head was banged against a wall, was not charged with any offence. He had sued for assault, battery and false imprisonment.
