Kate prank call DJs will not be charged

Australian police have said that radio DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian are unlikely to be charged over a prank call to the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated, after which nurse Jacintha Saldanha took her own life on 7 December.

Police hunt killer of Christmas organist

Police are hunting the killer of a retired social worker beaten to death as he walked to church to play the organ for a midnight Christmas Mass. Alan Greaves, 68, was fatally injured in the attack five minutes walk from his home where his family had gathered for Christmas Day. MORE

One million struck down by norovirus

More than a million people have been infected with norovirus, the winter vomiting bug, according to the Health Protection Agency. It said yesterday there had been 3,538 laboratory confirmed cases since the summer, an 83 per cent rise on the same period last year. MORE

Mubarak in hospital following a fall

Deposed leader Hosni Mubarak, 84, who is serving a life sentence for his role in killing protesters during a 2011 revolt, will stay in an army hospital for at least two weeks following a fall. He was transferred from his prison clinic on Thursday after his health deteriorated .

Last-chance bid to avert 'fiscal cliff'

President Barack Obama was holding a last-chance meeting with Congressional leaders last night to discuss how to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts due to kick in next week. There was no sign a deal would be reached in time. MORE

China has amended its law on the elderly to require that adult children visit their aged parents "often" – or risk being sued by them. With limited alternatives such as care homes, state media said elderly parents who felt neglected by their children could take them to court.

Wind turbines for hospitals plan

Hospitals are to be encouraged to install wind turbines and solar panels to cut the NHS's energy costs and help save the planet. Ministers are to establish a £50m fund to improve energy efficiency across the NHS which emits one million tons of carbon a year.

Dinosaur smuggler pleads guilty

A Florida man described by federal prosecutors as a "one-man black market" has pleaded guilty to smuggling dinosaur fossils into the US. Eric Prokopi was accused of importing and selling stolen artefacts including a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus Bataar skeleton. MORE

Police were called to a Spar store in Pwllheli, North Wales, after a druid leader refused to pay unless he was asked for the money in Welsh. Archdruid Dr Robyn Lewis, 83, was eventually served by a fluent Welsh-speaking cashier. He said: "I paid and left. Honour was satisfied."

Christmas (nearly) goes with a bang

Seven-year-old Sonny Cater discovered a Second World War bomb in Kings Lynn, using a metal detector he got for Christmas. Sonny, pictured with his brother Marley, nine, found the mud-covered object in a field near his home. A bomb disposal squad was dispatched, and identified it as a 10lb British practice bomb.
