A BREAK in the weather has come as a relief to Californian fire-fighters struggling to contain a big forest fire.

Hot winds had fuelled the so-called "Willows" fire at San Bernardino National Forest for much of the week. It has so far consumed 60,000 acres of woodland but yesterday falling temperatures, high humidity and a lull in the wind gave round-the-clock fire crews a helping hand in trying to contain the blaze.
