TEAMS OF rescue workers, police and tracker dogs in rural eastern South Africa began looking for survivors after a violent storm left 21 dead and injured more than 300. The storm, on Monday afternoon, flattened at least 50 houses. Ten children were among the 21 dead.

Weather officials could not confirm the storm was a tornado but at least one witness said it plucked cars from the ground.

Teams of rescue workers, police and sniffer dogs have been mobilised in rural eastern South Africa to look for survivors after a violent storm left 21 dead and injured more than 300.

The storm on Monday afternoon, flattening at least 50 houses. Ten children were among the 21 dead, said police Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta. Weather officials could not confirm the storm was a tornado but at least one witness said it plucked trees, cars and even a lorry from the ground.
