Police confirmed last night they were investigating allegations of financial deception arising from the claims that Dodi Fayed had fathered a secret child months before he died in Paris with Diana, Princess of Wales.

Diane Holliday told Mohamed Al-Fayed that she had given birth to his grandson just months before the film producer started his relationship with the Princess. Mr Fayed said he had given the woman pounds 5,000. A spokesman for Scotland Yard said inquiries were continuing and that no one had been arrested so far.

Yesterday Mr Fayed rejected a claim that his dead son had a secret child. His spokesman Michael Cole said that after an investigation he had concluded "with some degree of disappointment", that Mr Fayed did not have a grandchild.
