Gyorgy Cziffra, pianist, died Paris 16 January, aged 72. Made his name in the 1930s with his renditions of the works of Franz Liszt. Taken prisoner by the Red Army during the Second World War, he did not resume his career until 1947. Sentenced to three years' hard labour for trying to flee Hungary in 1950. Eventually left the country in 1956 and became a French national in 1968. Ran a foundation for young musicians and artists at the Saint- Frambourg Royal Chapel, in Senlis. Founded an annual music festival at the medieval abbey of La Chaise Dieu, in central France.
