Vivean Gray, the British-born actress who played Mrs Mangal in the Australian soap Neighbours, has died aged 92.

Grey is best known for her memorable turn as the unpopular, interfering and gossipy Mrs Mangel from 1986 to 1988. She reportedly faced a backlash over the growing dislike for Mrs Mangel, who appeared in 292 episodes of Neighbours.

Gray was born in Cleethorpes and moved to Australia in 1952 to pursue an acting career.

She was also known for playing the role of Ida Jessup in another Australian soap, The Sullivans.

Rick Maier, Network Ten’s Head of Drama, told the Sydney Morning Herald: “Mrs Mangel and Mrs Jessup were two of our most iconic characters from one our very best character actors.

“Ramsay Street changed forever, and certainly no secret was ever safe, with Mrs Mangel on the lookout.

“Vivean’s contribution to Australian drama will never be forgotten. It is a very sad day for the Neighbours’ family.”
