Donald Trump has told a US news show that he sometimes carries a gun.

He told CBS’s Face the Nation programme on Sunday that he has a concealed weapons permit and that he “sometimes” carries a firearm.

Trump told the show’s host, John Dickerson, he got the permit years ago because he felt “much better being armed” and added: “I like to feel protected.”

Trump went on to talk about Syria, saying he might have invaded after President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on his own people.

He said: "I am the most military-based and the most militaristic person on your show. I want to have a much stronger military. I want it to be so strong that nobody's going to mess with us.”

And he denounced the immigration of Syrian refugees to the US, calling instead for the creation of a safe zone within Syria.

He told the show: “What I won’t do is take in 200,000 Syrians who could be Isis. I’ve been watching this migration and I’ve seen the people. They’re mostly men and strong men. These are physically young strong men. They look like prime time soldiers…

“Two things: why aren’t they fighting for their country? And number two: I don’t want these people coming over here."

Trump also weighed in on the debate that teachers - including kindergarten teachers - should carry guns.

He called himself “a big Second Amendment person” and he said of the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon earlier this month: “If somebody in that room had had a gun the result would have been better.”

Trump’s comments came not long after a similar speech to a rally in Tennessee in which, according to Yahoo News, he told the crowd: “Let me tell you, if you had a couple teachers with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off.”

He went on:“This is about self-defence, plain and simple. “In fact, I have a license to carry in New York — can you believe that? Nobody knows that. Somebody attacks me, they’re gonna be shocked.”
